🧠 Your Body Responds to Mental Input as If It Were Physically Real

🗓️ January 4, 2017

Can you imagine what life would be like if we truly understood how to harness the full power of our brains if we could tap into our mental capacity with more awareness, more strategy, and more grace?

The brain is more trainable than we give it credit for. The more we exercise it, the more we grow intellectually. I once learned that the conscious mind only controls our thoughts about 5% of the day… while the subconscious takes over the remaining 95%. That means our inner programming our thoughts, wounds, patterns are silently running the show most of the time.

💫 Enter: Carrie Fisher

Over the past few weeks, my social feeds have been filled with images and tributes to Carrie Fisher. People have remembered her as bold, beautiful, kind, talented, flawed, and honest. But many were shocked to learn that Fisher also lived with bipolar disorder and had endured years of trauma and dysfunction, much of it unseen or misunderstood.

It’s easy to be a victim when you’re surrounded by people who don’t have your best interest at heart. And mental illness? It makes you especially vulnerable. It strips away your filters, exposes your rawest self and still, it’s met with judgment instead of compassion.

💔 A Different Kind of Battle

Mental illness isn’t treated the same as physical illness. You don’t get casseroles dropped off at your door. People don’t show up wearing ribbons or bracelets to raise awareness for the family trying to hold it together.

Families living with mental illness aren’t just helping one person they’re battling for the survival of the whole family unit. And in that struggle, you sometimes lose the very people you counted on most your parents, your children, your friends because they can’t handle what comes with it.

When you’re drowning in crisis, nobody’s asking, “Can I help with dinner?” or “Can I watch the kids?” No one’s organizing fundraisers when the breadwinner can’t work due to breakdowns or hospital stays. And while people forget, dismiss, or look away… you’re still there, praying, fighting, and quietly surviving.

There are no celebration posts for mental illness remission. You just go on. Quietly. Bravely.

🎭 Perception vs. Reality

While you're in survival mode, the world keeps spinning. Friends forget who you really are and instead get stuck on how you acted when your mind was at war with itself. They don’t understand the invisible weight. They don’t get why you missed that party, why you ghosted, why you flaked even though you wanted so badly to show up. Your silence is misread as rejection. Your pain is mistaken for drama. And your attempts to explain sound like excuses.

People don’t always forgive what you said or did during an episode even if, in that moment, you believed those thoughts were real. You know how a dream can feel realer than real? Now imagine being wide awake in that state, navigating life.

It’s terrifying not just for the one experiencing it, but for everyone watching, unsure what to say or how to help.

😔 Society’s Blind Spot

Mental illness is still something people don’t want to talk about. They’ll whisper it. Dismiss it. Label someone as “crazy” and move on. It’s easier that way.

But the division that mental illness causes within families? It’s real. It’s deep. And often, the person with the illness can’t even explain what they’re going through because their perception is so altered. The caregiver and the person struggling are fighting two completely separate wars and both feel isolated in the process.

And let’s be clear: every person with mental illness is unique. You can’t lump them into a category and expect cookie-cutter outcomes. That’s like saying all women are the same because we menstruate. It's reductive. It’s lazy. And it's wrong.

🧡 What They Really Need

They don’t need a savior.

They don’t need someone to “fix” them.

They need understanding.

They need presence.

They need support, especially when they're hardest to love.

Because when the spiral hits and they withdraw or lash out or shut down that’s when most people walk away.

But some… some stay.

💫 The Beauty You Missed

Here’s the thing: the people I know who live with mental illness? They’re some of the most brilliant, artistic, intuitive, and magnetic souls on the planet.

They feel everything and I mean everything. They create from a place of raw emotion most people don’t dare to visit. Their minds may be scattered, but their insights can be out of this world. They’re loyal, witty, complex, and unforgettable.

But when their "other side" shows up… that’s when people flee. And the truth of those friendships is revealed. The excuses roll in. The invitations stop. And the person is left wondering if anyone can handle the full spectrum of who they are.

🗣️ “You’re so pretty, so smart… why do you choose to deal with this?”

Let me be real clear: no one chooses mental illness.

And it’s insulting to imply that beauty, intelligence, or charm can somehow “cancel it out.”

Don’t condescend. Don’t sugarcoat. And don’t act like they haven’t heard it all before.

🌍 This Affects Us All

Mental illness is on the rise. You may not be affected today, but tomorrow? Your child, your grandchild, your sibling, or even you might be. Bipolar disorder often isn’t diagnosed until adulthood. Other conditions like anxiety, psychosis, or personality disorders sneak in quietly, slowly.

And when it comes for someone you love, you’ll remember this moment the moment you decided to either lean in or walk away.

It takes an incredible person to love someone through the darkest days of their mind.

A warrior of compassion. A spiritual linebacker. A person who refuses to give up, even when it would be easier to.

✨ To the ones battling…

You are strong. You are sacred.

You are not broken you are becoming.

Keep going.

🧠💚 You are not alone.
